Aim of Avanika Ayurvedic's Treatment for Psoariasis

The primary aim is to address the root cause of psoriasis, control inflammation and skin cell turnover, alleviate symptoms, and improve the quality of life of the patient. Ayurveda focuses on long-term goals rather than just suppressing symptoms.

Duration of Psoriasis treatment package At Avanika

Treatment duration for psoriasis is mainly 14 to 28 days and 6-month follow-ups.

Psoriasis can be cured if the patient is ready to accept the protocol and conditions fixed by the Ayurveda doctor for treatment, as well as changing the diet and lifestyle.

If it is in the initial stage, it can be cured fast. Otherwise, in chronic cases, regular treatment that continues for months will be needed.

It all depends on how the patient accepts the treatment modalities and how they strictly follow the dietary protocol for the rest of their life.

In almost all cases, treatment duration is 6 months to 1 year.

Treatment is rarely required beyond 1 year.

However, seasonal detox therapies are needed to prevent exacerbations.

What is Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects millions of people worldwide.

It is a multifactorial genetic disease that is exacerbated by genetic and environmental factors.

It is thought to occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, leading to rapid skin cell turnover.

This results in the accumulation of cells on the skin’s surface, forming thick, silvery scales and red, inflamed patches

Symptoms of Psoriasis

  • Loose silvery scales
  • Itchy scalp or burning skin
  • Raised pus-filled skin bumps
  • Skin redness around pustules
  • Restricted joint motion
  • Emotional distress
  • Skin pain and inflammation
  • Skin blisters
  • Dry skin patches
  • Bleeding skin patches

Causes

Psoriasis is a chronic, recurrent disorder of the skin. The sex incidence is equal, and the disease can start at any age, but the peak onset is in the second or third decades. While the exact cause is still being discovered, some of the prime causes can be:

    • Genetics: Family history can trigger psoriasis
    • Immunological and environmental factors
    • Physical trauma to the skin
    • Infection: Streptococcal infection
    • Drugs: Certain drugs like beta blockers, lithium, antimalarials, withdrawal of systemic steroids
    • UV radiation: Exposure to excess sunlight
    • Psychological Stress

When to See a Doctor?

  • It’s essential to seek medical advice if you experience:

    • Persistent abnormalities in the menstrual cycle.
    • Difficulty conceiving despite regular attempts.
    • Rapid weight gain or unexplained obesity.
    • Severe acne or hirsutism.

Different types of psoriasis

Psoriasis presents in various forms, including:

  • Plaque psoriasis: The most common type, characterised by red patches with silvery scales.
  • Guttate psoriasis: Small, drop-like lesions scattered across the body.
  • Inverse psoriasis: Occurs in skin folds, appearing as smooth, red patches.
  • Pustular psoriasis: Characterized by pus-filled blisters.

Erythrodermic psoriasis: A severe form affecting the entire body

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of psoriasis involves a detailed clinical consultation along with some laboratory tests like skin biopsy, if necessary. The diagnosis is primarily clinical based on physical examination of skin, scalp, and nails for signs of the condition. One needs to provide a detailed medical history, including family history, to help the physician with the diagnosis. One needs to provide details such as:

  • Experience symptoms such as itchy or burning skin.
  • Had a recent illness or experienced severe stress.
  • Take certain medicines.
  • Have relatives with the disease.
  • Experience joint tenderness.

This information will help the doctor diagnose the condition with specificity and accuracy. To rule out other skin conditions that look like psoriasis, your doctor may take a small skin sample to examine under a microscope

Ayurvedic Perspective on Psoriasis

Ayurveda views psoriasis as a manifestation of imbalances in the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. It is often associated with aggravated Pitta, which governs heat and metabolism, leading to inflammation and skin irritation.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Psoriasis

Ayurvedic Treatment for Psoriasis begins with a comprehensive consultation, including a detailed Ayurvedic diagnosis, personalised Prakriti (constitution) analysis, and subsequent treatment planning.

The treatment strategies are tailored to the individual and the season, and the medications are adjusted based on the disease’s progression.

Generally, two main treatment approaches are used, depending on the severity of the condition: Shodhan (panchakarma detox therapies) and Shaman (internal medications).

Shodhana / Panchakarma Therapies:

Shodhana therapy aims to eliminate accumulated toxins from the body. In the view of psoriasis, the following shodhana therapies are included to eliminate the aggravated doshas and accumulated toxins from the nearest external route in the body. This is primarily achieved through Panchakarma therapies, which are considered essential for the complete management of psoriasis.  Panchakarma is not always necessary for every patient and is decided by the Ayurvedic practitioner after a thorough examination.

Vamana (Emesis):

This involves the removal of vitiated kapha dosha through the oral route. It is preceded by the consumption of medicated ghee or oil for 5-7 days, tailored to the individual’s Kapha Dosha type and the specific presentation of their psoriasis, followed by emetic decoction on the day of emesis, which induces vomiting (Vamana).

Virechana (Purgation):

This involves the removal of vitiated pitta dosha through the anal route. Similar to Vamana, medicated ghee is consumed for 5-7 days, but this time considering the Pitta Dosha type and the individual’s condition.  This is then followed by purgative medication, which causes purgation (Virechana).

Other Supportive Panchakarma Procedures:

Depending on the individual’s needs, additional procedures like Takra Dhara (dripping medicated buttermilk over the head and body), Shirodhara (continuous pouring of medicated liquids over the forehead), and Nasya (nasal administration of medicated oils) may be recommended.  These are not always part of the core Panchakarma process and are used as needed.

Shaman (Internal Medications):

Shamanism involves the use of internal and external medications.

Internal Medications:

These typically consist of herbal formulations, decoctions, and medicated ghees, which are generally taken for at least 90 days.  The specific formulations are chosen based on the individual’s constitution and the stage of their psoriasis.

External Applications:

Medicated oils are commonly used for external applications.  Coconut oil infused with herbs like Wrightia tinctoria, Rubia cordifolia, Hemidesmus indicus, Tinospora cordifolia, and Azadirachta indica may be used.  Other oils like Jeevantyadi Yamakam, Eladi Kera Taila, Nalpamaradi Taila, and Maha Marichyadi Taila may also be incorporated, depending on the patient’s condition. These oils can be applied to and around the affected areas, even when the patient feels the urge to scratch.  This can provide relief from itching and inflammation.

  • Manage stress through yoga, meditation, or other relaxation techniques.
  • Get adequate sleep.
  • Avoid known triggers, such as stress, certain foods, or weather changes.

  • Practice regular exercise.
