What Are the Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the joints, leading to chronic inflammation and progressive joint damage. It is the most common inflammatory arthritis, particularly prevalent in women. The disease manifests as symmetrical polyarthritis, impacting both small and large joints, and is often accompanied by systemic disturbances.
- Persistent synovitis and joint pain
- Malaise or fatigue
- Weight loss
- Vague pain around joint structures
- Morning stiffness lasting over an hour
- Arthritis in multiple joint areas, including hands and feet
- Rheumatoid nodules on pressure points
- Systemic inflammation
- Generalised osteoporosis
- Muscle wasting
- Gradual joint deformities and mobility issues
What are the Causes?
RA is primarily an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints. The underlying causes include:
- Genetic predisposition
- Environmental triggers (infections, toxins, pollutants)
- Autoimmune response leading to chronic inflammation
- Accumulation of Ama (toxins) in joints, as per Ayurveda
Risk Factors of Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Gender: More common in women
- Family history of autoimmune diseases
- Smoking and exposure to toxins
- Obesity and poor lifestyle habits
- Chronic stress
- Poor gut health
What is Ayurvedic Concept on Rheumatoid Arthritis?
In Ayurveda, RA is closely associated with Vatarakta and Aamavata, where the imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas, along with the accumulation of Ama, leads to joint inflammation and degeneration.
The disease progresses through various stages, affecting Twak (skin), Mamsa (muscles), Asthi (bones), and Majja (bone marrow), eventually leading to irreversible joint deformities.
Rheumatoid Arthritis manifests mainly due to the vitiation of Vata, Kapha, and blood tissue in the body and the destruction of bodily tissues. This in turn leads to the destruction of joint structures.
Ayurveda views the presence of ama (accumulated toxins) in most cases.
The vitiation of blood tissue will definitely manifest as inflammation. Vata aggravation will affect mobility.
The presence of Ama can again cause swelling and stiffness to joints.
There will be different proportions of these factors in different stages of Rheumatoid Arthritis.
As the disease progresses complications are evident in the patient. Gradual involvement of the bodily tissues leads to multidimensional articular and nonarticular features in the patient.
Circulatory disturbances are also seen in Rheumatoid Arthritis when there is severe involvement of vata and rakta.
Ayurvedic Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis
The basic treatment protocol involves the pacification of Vata and Kapha with digestive as well as detox ayurvedic drugs. In the initial phase, the ama (accumulated toxins) are removed if any. After this phase, drugs which will control the inflammation are to be selected. Once the severity of inflammation is controlled the next treatment is mainly Vata pacification. Rejuvenative therapies are given at the end to enhance the immune system and prevent the recurrence. These drugs will minimise the extra articular impact of rheumatoid arthritis.
Detoxification & Panchakarma
Since there is vitiation of blood tissue in rheumatoid arthritis, virechana is the preferred detox procedure in the first phase. Castor oil based preparations are generally administered, as Vata is the main dosha. Panchakarma therapies help control autoimmune pathologies.
- Virechana (Purgation Therapy): Removes accumulated toxins and pacifies Pitta, Vata and Rakta.
- Vasti (Medicated Enema): Erandamooladi Vasthi, Madhutailika Vasthi, and Ksheera Vasthi help manage Vata and
- Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy): Using Jalouka (Leech therapy) to remove excess toxins and relieve joint inflammation.
